  1. Bangkok Opera to do its first Thai-language opera • A Boy and a Tiger by Bruce Gaston

One of Thailand’s leading innovative artists, Bruce Gaston, has created an opera inspired by Yann Martell’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel Life of Pi.

The composer worked with HIV children from Baan Gerda in Lopburi in order to develop all the singers for this production.  The child musicians, using Orff instruments, are joined by the Siam Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Somtow Sucharitkul.

The world premiere of the completed work will take place in 2010.

  1. Somtow signs cooperation deal with 18 worldwide opera companies

At the world opera summit in Beijing this June, Somtow Sucharitkul signed an agreement along with representatives of major opera houses such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Fenicein Venice, Den Norske Opera, Opera Austria, and the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona, for mutual collaboration and cooperation.  Hosted at the spectacular new National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, this was a historic event in the development of opera in Asia.
